JONATHAN YOO VISUAL RESUME
HCA Servants of the King
This is HCA's Servants of the King, an elite hand selected chorale group.
I take great pride in being a part of this group, as it has impacted me and many of those that we have performed to all over the world. Being a singer not only requires a competent voice, but also demands great character and personality. Being able to put on a show and make a lasting impression on our audience is crucial, as we become the face of our school and what we represent.
2022-2023 United Kingdom
Impacting Hundreds of Lives
This April, I had the chance to travel to the UK with my chorale group. We had practiced for countless hours, perfecting every nook and cranny of the pieces. We experienced the culture of the British, different cuisine, and experienced the frustration of being on the wrong side of the road. We sang from the shores of Loch Lomond in Scotland to the Wells Cathedral in the UK. Hundreds of people daily gathered around us to hear us perform, and we even got the chance to have a masterclass with world renowned music professors.
2021-2022 San Diego
A Competition of our Lifetimes
in 2022, our group traveled to San Diego, California, to partake in World Stride's National Heritage Festival. From participating in different masterclasses in order to perfect our songs or to singing on the shores of the San Diego beaches to practice out of the blue, every moment was a priceless experience. Of course it was not all just singing, we got to visit the Sea World, San Diego Zoo, and Old Town in order to understand the "culture" of our western counterparts. We won first place in all of the competition categories: Men's, Women's, and Mixed as well as the Adjudicators Award, a very prestigious award where each judge had to rate our piece over a 95 in total score.
2020-2021 International Heritage Festival
Struggles and Victory through COVID-19
In 2021, our group participated virtually in the International Heritage Festival for choirs all over the world, ranging from Japan to the UK. In spite of this competitive event, we were still mandated to wear masks, so we developed singers masks, a mask that was shaped like a duck's bill in order for us to have adequate3 space to project and sing and breathe, unlike the regular flat masks that choked us every time we tried to breathe. We had to adapt and roll with this unfortunate obstacle, and the efforts paid off. We won First and Second place throughout the board, and this event taught us to adapt and overcome despite road blocks.
HCA Dessert Theatre
A Night Full of Sweets and Treats
Our school, HCA, hosts an annual event called the HCA Dessert Theatre. As one could probably guess from the name, it is essentially a theatre or play put on by the student body while the audience gets to indulge in endless desserts, ranging from donuts, gummies, hot chocolate, and cookies. Servants of the King are required to put together most of the show, and perform in it as well. We also had to be the waiters and waitresses for our audience when we were not performing. This experience was so special and it taught everyone discipline, hard work, and the guts to perform on stage.
Getty Concert Carnegie Hall
Christmas With the Gettys
Servants of the King were invited to Carnegie Hall, New York's most renowned performing center, known almost everywhere in the world. We sang as the background choir for the Getty's, a famous family known for their hymn-making, and they perform a show every Christmas. We went through extensive rehearsals, as we had to solidify our songs in a span of two days for the big show. Thousands of people attended on the day of the show, and our faces and group were advertised all across the state. It was truly a memorable experience, not to just be in Carnegie Hall but to actually be on stage and performing.
Servants of the King CD
Our New Album!
In 2022. the Servants of the King decided to create a CD track with various types of Christmas music on the list. From a variation of the Twelve Days of Christmas to traditional songs such as Silent Night, every kind of Christmas song was on there in any shape or form. We traveled to Pennsylvania to a small studio in order to record, and we partook in a professional studio environment, set with headsets and microphones and witnessed real time professionals editing our music and messing with the mixer to highlight certain parts. Being in a studio and being able to create music and put it out there to the public is something that I will probably never have the chance to do so again.
A Special Thank You to
Mrs. Anne Paynter
Mrs. Paynter was our leader, mentor, conductor, and honorary mother throughout each one of our years spent here. She would do anything for us, and treated us like her own children. Although she did get mad and scary at times, she led us to victory every single time. She truly cares for us, and we do the same for her. Each and every one of my four years spent in this group has impacted me in ways that I cannot describe in words. I am so thankful that I was able to be a part of this group and I hope future prospecting students also experience this blessing.
